Every once in a while I just want to know what the hipsters are up to. For weeks all I could see on my Instagram feed were pictures of avocado on toast. Oh it’s not avocado mind you, it’s avo on toast. I have a huge fear of missing out, and it did look appetizing, so I gave it a try.
And I am converted. A piece of toast with mashed avocado, a poached egg on top, some salt, pepper, and chili flakes, and a drizzle of olive oil to top it off – this is my newest favorite. Any excuse to eat chili flakes is fine by me. So now I’m always on the lookout for the perfect avocado, because we all know how difficult it is to get it right. There seems to be a very small window where an avocado is good for eating – most times it’s overripe or underripe.
Everything about it, except perhaps the salt, is extremely healthy and good for you. Most times you don’t even need the egg, which is even better. When things come together like this, I feel so smug and self-righteous. You go, me. *pats self on back* As you can see, I have very small goals.
So now here I am taking my turn to post my avo on toast! #hipsterfail
Another trend I’ve embraced whole-heartedly is adult coloring books. Or rather, coloring books for adults. As my friend found out, you should be careful what you google if you don’t want to be shocked beyond belief at the results.
I’ve always loved coloring, and I always bring coloring books for long flights. I’ve never cared what other people think as I color in my seat. But choices were always limited, and coloring cartoon characters can sometimes get on your nerves. But now that coloring books are geared toward adults, we’re spoiled for choice. And it really is a great release after a long day at work. You can clear your mind without trying because it’s impossible to stress about anything as you mix and match your colors. I’ve always thought of myself as the most un-creative person in the world, but with coloring I think I can be pretty imaginative.
It’s also great to find like-minded people, and I discovered that one of my friends has also picked up this hobby. So now we’re comparing coloring books and sharing tips, and even planning coloring clubs!
Starting new hobbies makes me feel in control of my life (in probably the smallest way possible). It may not be the most interesting thing to say when someone asks you what you’ve been up to – “Oh you know, just eating avocado and coloring” – but it’s a pretty good mood booster.
